It was so weird that I always hear about this song of Rivermaya’s but I’ve never actually heard it. When I say “hear about it”, I mean, I always see it in songhits or in articles where they say that this is one of their best songs.
Then, while I was waiting for fanmade Final Fantasy videos to play in this chat channel called LinkTV (does anyone remember this?), I saw a live version of this song. And everyone in the chat is saying that this song was good. I said to myself that it was a very familiar song but it was only then that I learned that this was the “214” song that everyone’s raving about. Hahahhaa, I had no idea. :P
Anyway, I like the tune of the song, somewhat easy-listening but retains its rock characteristics that Rivermaya got famous for. The lyrics are obviously inspirational. ^^ Now that I write about this, I wonder if Rivermaya does better when they make slow songs or is it still rock songs? Hmm.
I thought that the hype and the rave over newcomer singer Kitchie Nadal would not last long. Sure, her debut single “Wag na Wag mong Sasabihin” was a phenomenal hit thanks to the combined powers of superb lyrics/tune and the fact that it was used as the theme song for one of the most popular and unforgettable Korean dramas in the Philippines (Lovers in Paris). But after that, I thought that Kitchie Nadal might just be a one-hit wonder. Thank goodness I was wrong. I think I’ve become one of her fans. ^^;;
I first heard of “Same Ground” through MYX. It was definitely one of the most frequently played music videos in order to promote the song. The video got me interested because it showed a different side of Kitchie compared to her rocker and slightly no-care-about-appearance and poorly-fixed-hair image (she was featured as a somewhat fairy slash princess in this video).
The song lyrics are a little complex for me but you’ll get used to it (if you listen to it many times like I did, lol). There are two versions of “Same Ground”, one is the piano version (which was used for her music video and the one I’m sharing here) and the probably original version which has a slow pop beat.
We all have our share of good songs that make us remember a certain period or point in our time. In my case, the song "Rainbow" takes me back to my college days (ah, memories~)
I first heard about this song through one of my college friends, she was apparently raving about how good and nice this song was. I thought that if it was really a good song then it won't take me long to be able to hear it. Sure enough, the song debuted quickly in the top ten list in MYX (one of the channels that I frequently go to when there's no other good shows especially in the morning).
What struck me first is the nice and soothing melody of the song. I can tell you over and over how much I love these kinds of ballads. The lyrics complimented the tune perfectly. I liked Southborder even back when they had their previous vocalists but "Rainbow" is in my opinion their best piece ever,
Back when I was in college, we would often hear this song on TV and we'd turn the volume up and sing along. *laughs* ^_^
Let's see...I said before that I started liking many Filipino songs (and I still am). ^_^ I first heard about Hale through their first song "Broken Sonnet". Unfortunately, it didn't leave a big impression on me. The second song, however, is another thing. I got totally addicted to it.
First, it's a slow rock song, I'm kind of a sucker to those kinds of songs. ^^;; The vocals were very good too. If I initially didn't know that it was by Hale, I would've thought that it's an American song. I think Champ's voice has that slightly garbled style that most American singers have. This song had been on the top for such a long time, it would be unlikely to not know about it during the time it was a big hit. I think this song also prompted for Hale to be well-known in the Philippines.
Sure, there's a fact that the members of Hale are from the UST Conservatory of Music (go USTe!) but that's just an added bonus. Hahaha. ^_^
While this journal might get dominated by Japanese and Western stuff, I might as well add in a few bits from my own country. :D
Lately, there have been many good Filipino bands and performers and I have to say that I've gotten more preoccupied with them compared to before when I barely knew any OPM performers because I'm more into the Western scene. ^^;;
For me, MYMP stood out because of their nice acoustic sound and relaxing melodies. Though they have been making a lot of hits because of revivals only, I hope that they would release their own original works soon just as they did when they debuted in the music scene. In addition, I think Juris' voice is really nice and mellow. I'm so proud that they are also being recognized by foreigners particularly my Korean students before. They remarked that they too have been listening to Filipino singers and that MYMP (and Nina) were among their favorites.
"Sa Kanya" is not their original song (can anybody tell me who/which band originally sang this song?) but I really like their rendition of it. It's got the LSS-factor to me. They have so many good versions in their double CD but I chose just one to share here. ^_^
